DLC, that was better than the main game

DLC: It didn’t start well. Remember the Proof of Ownership DLC from day one?

What about exclusive pre-orders that were never released separately? Oblivion’s horse armor?

Even after the bad old days, we have twitch drops and microtransactions galore.

But it’s not always like that – juicy expansions, big new story moments and extraordinary gameplay variations make their debut in the DLC.

Some are even so good they beat the base game. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony

The best laptop games
All games coming out in August

Contrast is the name of the game for The Ballad of Gay Tony, a great upgrade for the amazing GTA 4 game.

The story is woven into the base game, but it feels like a slightly lighter break from the endlessly dark stories.

It’s a bit like auditioning for the crazy moments of GTA 5 with its neon lights and wild action. It’s worth playing in its own right and the gaming archeology it represents. It will bridge you to GTA 6.

BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea

Back to Rapture, back under the sea, and back to where it all began in what turned out to be the grand finale for BioShock – at least for a few years.

It’ll bring back your memories of the first game as best it can, so we hope you’ve played it – and if you haven’t, it’s a great trilogy.

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine

Blood and Wine has everything from vampires to vineyards to beautiful fields, providing an alternate backdrop to the war-torn world that The Witcher 3 typically inhabits.

Easily one of the best DLC pieces for any game ever…

The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone

…And that’s it.

Blood and Wine is bigger but Hearts of Stone is the best in terms of story and characters. One of the best antagonists ever put into a video game, and a dozen equally great characters, it’s a feast of dialogue and voice acting.

The Last of Us: Left behind

An oddity that fits halfway into the story of The Last of Us Part 1, Left Behind has canonized and explained much of Ellie’s story while significantly enriching TLOU’s gameplay.

You can see the thought process and conclusions drawn when bridging the gap between the original game and Part 2 and how it all started with this excellent DLC.

XCOM 2 – War of the Chosen

XCOM 2 took XCOM and made it better – more bombastic, more options, more story, more of everything.

War of the Chosen took XCOM 2 and did exactly the same thing. It’s the best form of tactical turn-based alien annihilation combat out there, and you’ll thoroughly enjoy it.

There’s just no reason to play the game without War of the Chosen.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – The Fate of Atlantis

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey begged for more weird, weirder, more mythical elements and this DLC delivered great results.

Artists, designers and everyone else really had to flex their muscles when designing Atlantis, Hades and Elysium. Also, hanging out with gods is always a bonus.

Mass Effect 3 – Citadel

Mass Effect 3’s ending had issues – conclusion, implications for the decision, the list went on. Citadel did what it could to help.

It’s a whirlwind through the story of the series, bringing back and solidifying relationships with your crewmates throughout the franchise, and throwing in a silly story to boot.

It’s the ending that Mass Effect deserves.

Bloodborne – The Ancient Hunters

FromSoftware could have an entry on this list for pretty much every DLC it’s ever made, but we’ll limit ourselves to Bloodborne: The Old Hunters.

I was stunned to see myself in one of my husband's 15 year old childhood photos
This Morning's Alison Hammond looks slimmer than ever in her gold dress

One of the hardest bosses in FromSoft history, incredible landscapes, tons of gameplay, cool new weapons.

If the Elden Ring DLC is this good, we’ll be foaming at the mouth.
