The Doctor Who showrunner has teased that the Doctor and her companion Yasmin will finally open up about their romantic feelings for each other in the upcoming Easter special.
Chris Chibnall said conversations between the pair, played by Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill, would “develop and take place” during the one-off episode called Legend Of The Sea Devils.
He’s often been involved in romantic subplots since The Doctor first appeared on screen 60 years ago, but this marked the first same-sex relationship with a companion on television.
Yasmin finally confided in Dan Lewis, played by comedian John Bishop, about her feelings for the Doctor in the latest New Year’s episode, Eve Of The Daleks.
Ahead of the next special, Chibnall said, “Dan caught the dynamic between the Doctor and Yaz and watched from afar, which they don’t admit to themselves.
“I really think in Eve Of The Daleks both Yaz and the Doctor have indicated that they have feelings that they repress and remain silent.
“So there are some conversations that need to be had and you will see those conversations unfold and take place in Legend Of The Sea Devils.
“The Doctor and Yaz have something to discuss.”
Gill, who has played the doctor’s assistant since joining the program in 2017, also shared a glimpse of how their potential relationship was evolving.

She said: “The relationship between the Doctor and Yaz has definitely evolved.
“There’s not much I can say about that, but there’s a lot of courage, a lot of emotion and a lot of understanding and openness.
“Conversations didn’t wrap up in this episode, but they’ve definitely progressed from where they were in the New Year’s episode. There are many open and honest conversations.”
Gill said the episode, set in a coastal village in China and featuring the return of the classic Sea Devil monsters, would give viewers “a sense that something’s coming because there’s always something coming when the Doctor’s around.”
She added, “Things aren’t settled by the end of the episode, and I think that goes for the relationship between Yaz and the Doctor, but also for the Doctor’s history and future.”
Whittaker, who has played the Time Lord since 2017, announced in July that she was leaving the BBC sci-fi drama after three specials.
Showrunner Chibnall will also leave the program to be replaced by Russell T. Davies, who was behind the show’s 2005 revival.
Legend Of The Sea Devils will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Easter Sunday 17 April at 19:10.
