Doctor Who stars lead tributes to ‘reality legend’ Bernard Cribins

The Doctor Who stars and creative team hailed Bernard Cribbins as a “reality legend” who left a “lasting legacy” after his death at the age of 93.

His favorite television star and children’s entertainer played Wilfred Mott, the grandfather of Doctor Donna Noble’s (Catherine Tate) companion from 2007 to 2010 and will appear in a 2023 episode celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has shared an image of the Cribbins playing Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

He wrote: “He loves being on Doctor Who. He said ‘Kids are calling me grandpa!’ His first date is on location with Kylie Minogue, but all eyes, even Kylie’s, are on Bernard.

“He showed up with a suitcase full of props, just in case, including a rubber chicken. And what an actor. Oh, really, what a great actor. We took him to the TV Choice Awards and sent him to accept the award ourselves, and the whole audience stood up and cheered for him.

“It was a lovely memory. He would call and say ‘I have an idea! What if I attack Dalek with a paintball gun?! ‘ All right, Bernard, it worked! “

Davies said he feels “lucky” to have known the Cribbins, adding: “Thanks for everything, my old soldier. A legend has left the world”.

John Simm, who played the treacherous Time Lord, The Master, in Doctor Who, also paid tribute, writing on Instagram: “Farewell Bernard. Loved him. He’ll happily do all the Noble’s voices on command…really take me back in time, for real!

“I am forever indebted to @russelltdavies63 for giving me the opportunity to meet/know/work with him. Indeed a man. Truly an actor. What a life! An actual legend. God bless him.”

Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss also paid tribute, writing on Twitter: “There is no one like the Cribbins. A talented comic actor with an amazing line of sick and real heart.

“Best known to Doctor Who fans as a friend to the Doctor and Wilfred Mott, Donna’s maternal grandfather, Bernard left a lasting legacy in film and television.”

Characters from Cribbins’ time as a children’s TV presenter also shared their memories of him.

Dame Floella Benjamin tweeted: “I loved working with #BernardCribbins in the 80s.

“He is a creative genius, a great storyteller and knows how to communicate with an audience. He left a lasting legacy.”

One of his most memorable stage roles was playing Moonface Martin in Anything Goes alongside Elaine Paige at the Prince Edward Theater in 1989.

Musical star Paige said: “I’m very sad. My dear friend Bernard Cribbins has passed away. We met on Anything Goes and kept our “Friendship” for over 33 years.

“A very special man with many talents. Funny, kind, honest, always with a smile on his face & a good saying. One of the good guys. I will miss him very much.”

Sir Tim Rice, the lyricist known for his work on shows like Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Andrew Lloyd Webber, also remembers Cribbins for his turn in Anything Goes.

He tweeted: “RIP Bernard Cribbins. Excellent film/stage actor. Lovely chap.

“Must know he co-produces Anything Goes w/@elaine_paige (rare example of my co-producer not losing a pack).

“BC a brill Moonface Martin. And his best-selling records… Hole in The Ground, Fred was right. “
