elden ring is full of surprises. Whether it’s seemingly innocent deathbed girls secretly giving you a debuff, surprisingly effective invader cheeses, or just giant crabs that come out of nowhere to absolutely body you, By software‘s latest version never lets up with the intrigue.
If you’ve made even a small amount of progress in the game, you know that dogs are a massive problem – they can often just appear out of nowhere and very easily cost you a bunch of runes if you’re not careful. Sure, they’re not that difficult to ship… but they can be irritating if you’re not prepared.
One of the more surprising things we’ve learned over the past week since the game’s launch is the effectiveness of the Beast-Repellent Torch; Not only is the item used to light up caves or ignite the more flammable enemies you may encounter in The Lands Between, but it can also be used to repel the hounds and even chase them away.
The harmless-looking item apparently exudes a “special incense” that “appeases wild beasts.” In the clip embedded below, courtesy of the always inventive r/EldenRing subreddit, you can see the object repels the drooling dog and turns him into an unfortunate pup that’s easily herded away.
And the effectiveness of the torch doesn’t just stop with dogs, no; It also works on rats, snails, and other creatures in the rich fauna of the doomed world of Elden Ring (yes, even the “T-Rex Hounds”). Just be aware that for some reason birds are immune to the putrid charms of stinky incense. Unfortunately, as one Redditor noted in the comments, “this won’t work on the Runebear, you’ve been warned”. We thank these users for their sacrifice in the name of science.
Check out how effective this blazing, torch-carrying method of animal control is in the clip below:
