Missing journalist Dom Phillips’ wife has confirmed a body has been found in the Amazon rainforest.

Brazilian journalist André Trigueiro said Mr Phillips’ wife Allesandra shared the tragic news.

He tweeted: “Alessandra, wife of Dom Phillips, has just informed me that the bodies of her husband and Indigenous leader, Bruno Pereira, have been found.”

It comes after Mr Phillips’ wife and mother-in-law said all hope of finding him alive has vanished.

In a heartbreaking statement, they paid tribute to the beloved husband and son-in-law, as well as his traveling companion and friend Bruno Pereira.

Mr Phillips disappeared along with veteran Indigenous expert Mr Pereira on June 5 in a remote part of the western Amazon.

After days of searching by the army, navy, police and indigenous people in the remote region, little was found of the two men.

Now Mr Phillips’ mother-in-law has said in a heartfelt statement that she has lost all hope of ever seeing him return home. Mr Phillips’ wife re-released the statement and said she agreed with it.

In a post she wrote on Instagram, she said: “They are no longer with us. Mother Nature swept her away with a grateful hug.

“The material was undone and incorporated into the soil they so loved and respected.

“Their souls have joined those of so many others who gave their lives defending the rainforest and indigenous peoples.

“Today they are part of an immense and vibrant life energy that emanates from this immense green in the heart of Brazil.”

The two men disappeared while on a reporting trip as part of a trip Mr Phillips was taking for a book he was working on.

Pereira was a regular guide and friend and they interviewed the indigenous people throughout the expedition.

They were first reported missing when their boat failed to show up at the scheduled return point in the town of Atalaia do Norte.

One man, Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, was arrested by authorities and seen threatening the couple a day before they disappeared.

Traces of blood found on Da Costa’s boat and what police described as “apparently human organic material” had been sent for forensics.
