Dómhnal Slattery takes on the role of Special Advisor at Pure Harvest in Abu Dhabi

Aeronautical entrepreneur Dómhnal Slattery, who recently resigned as chief executive of Dublin-based aircraft leasing company Avolon, has been appointed special advisor to Abu Dhabi-based agritech company Pure Harvest Smart Farms.

ure Harvest was founded by Sky Kurtz, the managing director. The company focuses on year-round sustainable production of fruit and vegetables in the harsh desert environment.

It is behind the first high-tech, commercial-scale, semi-automated growing system in the Middle East.

It touts its technology as seven times more efficient than typical desert greenhouse farms and more than 30 times more efficient than traditional field farming.

According to Pure Harvest, part of its mission is to provide “true and tangible food security” and to help the UAE move towards self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability.

Pure Harvest has raised $387 million (€376 million) to date. Earlier this year, the company raised $180 million in its latest funding round, backed by UK-based Metric Capital Partners, Korea’s IMM Investment Corporation and Saudi Arabia’s Olayan Group.

The company intends to use the equity through debt financing to expand its presence in the Gulf and enter new markets in Asia.

Mr. Slattery is a co-founder of Avolon and was its CEO until this year. Avolon is one of the world’s largest jet leasing companies.

Mr. Slattery is also non-executive chairman of New York-listed Vertical Aerospace, a developer of electric air taxis that has hundreds of pre-orders from global airlines.

“In a world fraught with geopolitical challenges, food security is one of the most critical and worrying issues facing humanity,” said Mr. Slattery.

“When I look at companies I work with, I pay close attention to the intent of the founders, their character, the problems they are trying to solve and also the net contribution they are making to our planet.”

Mr Kurtz said Mr Slattery’s experience and international connections made him an “ideal consulting partner”.

Mr. Kurtz is a former vice president at Franciso Partners, the $15 billion San Francisco-based tech investment firm.

He has also been involved in technology startups, including co-founding Vence, an autonomous virtual fence system for livestock management.

In Ireland, Mr. Slattery has formed a new vehicle called Clahane Capital where he is CEO.

He was assisted in this venture by Yvonne Gallagher, who is Vice President of Operations. She is a former executive of Avolon.
