Dominic Calvert-Lewin will miss the start of the season as Everton examine his knee injury to see if it is serious.
That leaves manager Frank Lampard without strikers for Saturday’s opening game against Chelsea as Richarlison sells and Salomon Rondon is still suspended after his red card against Brentford last season.
Calvert-Lewin, who was limited to 15 Premier League starts in an injury-plagued season last year but scored the goal that kept Everton alive, was injured in training and Everton are waiting to see if he can make the trip to Aston next week will be fit villa.
Lampard said: “We are investigating Dom’s injury. No timeframe has been confirmed and we’re pretty sure what level it is, so let’s hope it’s not long-term.
“We will miss him for Chelsea. He looked in great physical shape and was training really well. It was an unusual injury in training that happened.
“It’s a shame but we need to find solutions to stay strong without Dominic before he returns.”
