“I’ve never been to Highclere (the castle) before… you go up the road and you go over the foothills and there it is.
“It’s like some Disney castle and you can’t believe it’s real.
“It was an extraordinary outline against, against the horizon and… so that was the first kind of breath.”

When meeting his co-stars, he added: “I had a whole day or two, even with Maggie Smith. I was sitting next to her at that famous dining table.
“I’m talking to her… she’s the funniest woman alive and also the cutest.
“It was funny sitting there talking to her, it was amazing and… all the actors sat down and you can see how long they’ve been doing this.”
West said that the food scenes in the series were “difficult to film” due to the heat and the need to film each character, but added that he was “like a kid in a candy store” throughout the process.
