Donald Trump files £419million lawsuit against CNN over alleged defamation

Former US President Donald Trump is suing CNN for $475million (£419million) in damages for allegedly defaming him to short-circuit a future political campaign.

The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., focuses primarily on the term “The Big Lie” over Mr Trump’s false claims of widespread fraud, which he says will drive him the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden has cost.

There was no immediate comment from CNN.

Mr Trump repeatedly attacked CNN for President, which resonated with his conservative supporters.

Similarly, he has filed lawsuits against big tech companies with little success. His case against Twitter for kicking him off his platform following the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot was dismissed by a California judge earlier this year.

Numerous federal and local election officials from both parties, a long list of courts, senior former campaign officials and even Trump’s own attorney general have all said there is no evidence of the voter fraud he alleges.

His lawsuit claims “The Big Lie,” a phrase with Nazi connotations, has been used more than 7,700 times on CNN in reference to him since January 2021.

“It’s meant to upset, scare and trigger people,” he said.

In a statement Monday, Mr Trump suggested filing similar lawsuits against other news organizations, adding that he could also take “appropriate action” against the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack.

The lawsuit comes as he weighs a possible bid for the presidency in 2024.

New CNN boss Chris Licht privately urged his news staff at a meeting more than three months ago not to use the phrase because it comes too close to Democratic efforts to brand the former president, according to multiple published reports.
