Donald Trump would have handled the Ukraine crisis differently – Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan said former US President Donald Trump would have handled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “certainly differently”.

The 57-year-old TV presenter said he conducted a “rather unruly” interview with Mr Trump for his new show on TalkTV, which starts next week, as the two clashed over whether the last US election was rigged.

A promotional video released for the special on Sunday showed Morgan and Mr Trump discussing the Ukraine crisis, with the former president explaining how he would have handled the conflict.

Mr Trump said: “Putin uses the ‘N-word’. I call it the “N-word”. He uses the ‘N-word’, the core word, all the time. That’s a no-no, you shouldn’t do that. He uses it every day.

“We have better weapons, we have the greatest submarine power in history.

“I would say we have a lot more than you. We are far, far more powerful than you and you can never use that word again.

“You can never use the atomic word again.”

Speaking to the BBC on Sunday morning about the interview, Morgan said he “don’t know” if Mr Trump’s approach to the crisis would have worked, but that he would have handled it “certainly differently”.

He said: “It’s an interesting question whether, given his particular way of dealing with dictators like North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and with traditional American enemies like Vladimir Putin, would Putin still be US President had Putin actually gone to Ukraine .

“He says no, and he has a real problem with how America in particular is handling the Ukraine invasion.

“I don’t know, but what hasn’t worked is dealing with it conventionally.

“I had the feeling from the start that we are just showing Putin in the West weakness, we don’t respond to him, and the American President, the German Chancellor, constantly make an effort to say that we are not doing World War III we don’t want to do anything to upset him.

“This genocidal monster is laying Ukraine on the ground, it is bombing maternity hospitals, it is burning Holocaust survivors, what is our moral red line?

“If it were a NATO country, apparently we would feel morally obligated to engage with it, I honestly don’t see any moral difference, other than that they’re not in NATO right now.”

The 75-minute interview, which took place at Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., will be shown Monday at 8 p.m. on TalkTV.
