DONEGAL native Fergal Harkin will leave his position at Manchester City to join Standard Liège in Belgium as sporting director.
The 45-year-old, who played for Bohemians and Finn Harps after a cross-channel stint at Leicester City, has worked for Manchester City for 12 years, most recently as Manager of Football Partnerships and Pathways overseeing players on loan from the Premier League champions.
Highly regarded in football, he was linked with a sporting director role at Celtic last year.
But a report in Belgium’s Les Sports Outlet today claimed that Standard Liège had fielded Harkin for their key post.
10-time Belgian champions, Standard have reached the Europa League group stage three times in the last four years but have had a poor season this season, finishing 14th in the 18-team league and missing out on European qualification.
