A “doomsday cult” mother accused of murdering her two children has been declared competent to stand trial.

Lori Vallow, from Idaho, USA, reportedly believed that her children were “zombies” possessed by dark spirits and that only death could set them free.

She and her husband Chad Daybell, 53, have been charged with a range of offenses including murder, in the deaths of JJ Vallow, seven, and Tylee Ryan, 16.

Daybell was also charged with the murder of his first wife, Tammy.

Vallow, 48, was committed to a psychiatric facility almost 10 months ago but has now been declared fit to stand trial by Fremont County District Judge Steven Boyce.

She will be brought before the Fremont County Courthouse on April 19.

Chad Daybell is also accused of murdering his wife, Tammy, who was his wife when he met Vallow

Vallow and Daybell have been accused of killing their children after officers discovered the remains of the missing children while digging up Daybell’s yard in Rexburg, Idaho, USA, in 2020.

Tylee’s body had been dismembered and burned while JJ was wrapped in plastic and bound with duct tape

After a lengthy investigation, Vallow and Daybell were charged on May 24, 2021 with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

It came after officers found Tammy dead at Daybell’s home on October 10, 2019.

At first it was thought that she had died of natural causes.

However, Daybell, a writer, was later accused of murdering his wife, Tammy, who was still his wife when he met Vallow.

Just weeks after Tammy’s body was found, Daybell and Vallow were officially married.

The indictment states that Daybell and Vallow justified their alleged crimes with their religious beliefs.

Daybell’s novels were apocalyptic stories based largely on Mormon beliefs. The pair are believed to have met through their belief in the ‘end of the world’.

Vallow appeared on Daybell’s podcast in 2018 while still married to fourth husband Charles, who was shot dead in 2019.

Melanie Gibb, a close friend of Vallow’s, told East Idaho News that her friend had said some strange things to her in the weeks leading up to the children’s disappearance.

Shortly after moving to Idaho, she had told Melanie that JJ was acting like a “zombie” and that he was getting in the way of her “mission,” so she planned to send him to his grandmother, Kay.

Vallow’s brother Adam said on The Followers: Madness of Two podcast that his sister’s marriage to Daybell was the “perfect storm.”

He claimed his sister was obsessed with death and the afterlife, which he says led her to Daybell’s conspiracies.

Speaking of his sister’s mental health, Adam said, “She’s still in the same frame of mind … to the extent that she believes she’s chosen, she and Chad are chosen to be whatever for the second coming.”

He added, “Lori actually spoke a lot about death, talked about the next life, how amazing the next life is and how it’s going to be perfect and that her children don’t have to suffer in the next life.”
