A recent image released by NASA taken by its Curiosity rover appears to show a “door” cut into the rock face on Mars, prompting much speculation as to what might be hiding behind it
A clean-cut “door” leading into a rock face has been spotted in a newly released image of Mars by NASA taken with its Curiosity rover.
There has been much debate among space enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists as to what might be inside the doorway, or if it is just a natural feature in the rock.
The grainy image captured by the discoverer’s mast camera or “mastcam” on Sol 3466 (May 7) appears to show an opening with eroded rock, the reported daily record.
There hasn’t been an official statement from the American space agency about the door opening, but that hasn’t stopped the online debate about exactly what it shows.
One social media user described the scene as “a formation on Mars that looks like a portal and a nearby wall that looks artificial.”
Another concluded: “Swear to God there are at least five Martians cloaked in there.”
However, others were more “down to earth,” as one Reddit user put it: “It’s obviously not a small door, it’s just a flat piece of broken rock.”
The result comes as the US Congress is scheduled to hold a public hearing on UFOs next Tuesday for the first time in over 50 years.
The House Intelligence Committee’s Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence and Counterproliferation will consider the issue.
Panel chair Rep. Andre Carson stated, “The American people expect and deserve their government and intelligence leaders to seriously evaluate and respond to all potential risks to national security — particularly those that we do not fully understand.”
In the summer of 2021, the US government published a report on documented cases of so-called “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” (UAP).
In it, the Director of National Intelligence investigated 144 cases of UFOs, but was only able to explain one.
Meanwhile, scientists on Thursday got the first glimpse of a supermassive black hole, engulfing all matter within its immense gravitational pull, at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
The black hole – dubbed Sagittarius A* or Sgr A* – is the second ever imaged.
The feat was accomplished by the same international collaboration with Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) that in 2019 revealed the first photo of a black hole – located at the heart of another galaxy.
University of Arizona astronomer Feryal Azel welcomed “the first direct image of the gentle giant at the center of our galaxy,” which shows a glowing ring of red, yellow, and white surrounding a dimmer center, at a news conference in Washington.
Sagittarius A* (pronounced Sagittarius “A” star) has four million times the mass of our Sun and is about 26,000 light-years – the distance that light travels in one year, 5.9 trillion miles – from Earth.
