Dorries: RT must never again broadcast toxic propaganda in the UK

Kremlin-backed broadcaster RT should lose its license and “never again” be able to broadcast “toxic propaganda” into British homes, the culture minister has said.

Adine Dorries told MPs she hopes TV watchdog Ofcom’s 27 investigations into RT will result in its license being revoked.

The network – formerly Russia Today – was unavailable on Sky, Freesat and Freeview on Wednesday.

Ms Dorries said she has also contacted Meta and TikTok to urge them to stop streaming RT through their online platforms.

It is my absolute position that we will not stop until we have convinced all organizations, whether based in the UK or not, that pouring Russian propaganda into British homes is wrongSecretary of State for Culture Nadine Dorries

Ms Dorries said in the House of Commons that Russian President Vladimir Putin “must not be allowed to take advantage of our open and free media to spread toxic propaganda in British homes”.

Conservative former Secretary David Jones asked the Cabinet Secretary: “Can you share with Ofcom what I perceive as the feeling in this House that it would be regrettable if Russia Today ever returned to UK screens?”

Ms Dorries replied: “I totally agree (Mr Jones). I published the letter I wrote to Ofcom shortly after I wrote it last week; They launched 27 live investigations into Russia Today.

“I hope they move forward with this investigation and that this investigation will result in Russia Today’s license being revoked so that they are never again able or have the platform to broadcast their propaganda to the UK.”

Ms Dorries also said when asked by SNP: “As part of a concerted effort and discussion, Russia Today will no longer be streamed to UK homes via TV, Sky, Freesat or Freeview.

“We have contacted both Meta and TikTok to ask them to stop streaming Russia Today through their own online platforms.

“It is my absolute position that we will not stop until we have convinced every organisation, UK based or not, that it is wrong to stream Russian propaganda into UK homes.”

Previously, Ms Dorries was on the verge of tears as she said: “I just want to say my sincere thanks and admiration to all the journalists who work for the BBC, ITV and other news outlets who are risking their lives to provide us unbiased and accurate news from one live war zone.”

On Monday, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned that if RT shuts down in the UK, the BBC could be banned in Russia.

She said “careful assessment” was needed as retaliation against the BBC would harm efforts to ensure Russians “know the truth” about the invasion of Ukraine.

RT has accused the “collective Western establishment” of being “terrified of the mere presence of an outside voice for fear of losing their historically captive audience when that audience encounters another perspective.” Dorries: RT must never again broadcast toxic propaganda in the UK
