Drag artist Alfie Ordinary officially opens the new Brighton Co-op

DRAG artist Alfie Ordinary has cut the ribbon to officially launch a new cooperative.

The Brighton-based artist wore a floral gown and mock scissors to the ceremony alongside staff at the shop on London Road in Brighton.

Alfie Ordinary not only declared the store open, but also DJed on opening day.

Ferhat Spurling, Store Manager for the new store, said: “We’ve had a great response – customers are telling us they love it.

“It is a spacious purpose built new store with a grand appearance.

“We are delighted to have had the opportunity to open Co-op’s newest store on London Road.

“Our goal at Co-op is to operate at the heart of local life and we look forward to welcoming our members and customers to their new business. We have worked to create the range, choice, products and additional services to create a truly compelling offering to conveniently serve the community.”

As part of Launch Day, Brighton’s Arch Healthcare Co-op donated £750 in ‘dignity bags’ to help people affected by homelessness.

The bags support a hospital stay without the basics and contain toiletries, soap, shower gel, pyjamas, underwear and feminine hygiene products.

The new store opened on the same site as a previous co-op that was demolished to make way for new student accommodation.
