Drag queens record special move announcements for Brighton Pride

TWO drag queens have been recruited by a train company to add ‘pizzaz’ to travel messages ahead of Pride celebrations in Brighton and Hove.

Stephen Richards and Jason Sutton, better known as Lola Lasagna and Miss Jason, have both been part of the UK drag scene for over 25 years, performing shows in Brighton and across the country.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), which operates the Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services, snapped up the couple to record special station announcements which will catch the attention of commuters from August 1.

Stephen Richards, who stars as Lola Lasange, said: “I travel through Brighton station regularly so the opportunity to record my own PA announcements was too exciting to turn down.

“People from across the UK are heading to Brighton for Pride weekend and these messages are helping to welcome everyone to our glorious hometown.”

The announcements serve as a reminder of the event taking place while also encouraging people to review their travel plans before traveling.

On the Saturday night of next week’s celebrations there will also be special messages about the Rainbow queuing system at Brighton Train Station to help those leaving the event find the right queue for their journey home.

Jason Sutton, who stars as Miss Jason, said: “You know us drag queens – never the ones who turn down an opportunity to get on the mic.

“It was so much fun romping around Brighton Station that day and recording our own announcements.

“A huge thank you to GTR for letting us do our thing and for all your help in getting people to and from Pride.”

GTR will be offering an enhanced service over Pride weekend, with additional staff at Brighton train station to help festival-goers travel safely.

Ryan Massen, Head of Brighton Southern Station and part of GTR’s Pride planning team, said: “Brighton and Hove Pride is an event we look forward to every year and we can’t wait to host it again next weekend at the to welcome the city.

“We do a lot to help people travel safely by train and we thought, ‘What better way to spread our travel message this year than with the help of two well-known and beloved drag performers?’

“If you’re waiting for a train on the southern part of our network, pay close attention to the station announcements as you may only hear a voice you know.”
