Dragon Age 4 Quality Assurance personnel apply to form a union

A group of quality assurance testers working on Dragon Age 4 have submitted a union application.

The employees, who work directly with developer BioWare but as contractors to backing company Keywords Studios, are trying to unionize over issues of poor pay, a return-to-work mandate and more.

An anonymous source told Kotaku that Keyword employees had to return to their Alberta office on May 9, despite cases of COVID-19 slowly increasing since early April.

Keyword employees would not be eligible for sick pay if they had to quarantine due to COVID-19, the source said, while BioWare employees would be allowed to work entirely from home.

The decision to return to work appeared to be the last straw for the 15-20 QA testers who are said to be already underpaid. The source said some employees are being paid CA$16.50 per hour — $12.82 — which is significantly less than identical roles performed by full-time BioWare employees.

Other issues were raised, including gender pay discrimination, a lack of useful performance reviews and a hostile response to union efforts.
