Dragonflight hopes to challenge the competitive WoW scene with major changes to standard plays

Dragonflight, WORLD of Warcraft’s latest major update, will be released on November 28th, and fans are excited to see how the game will change.

Dragons are being introduced to the game for the first time as playable characters, while other class changes hope to shake up WoW’s online competitive play.

A combination of three types of players has long dominated the competitive scene.

Since the last major update of 2020, dubbed Shadowlands, most players on the competitive scene have stuck to a rogue, mage, and priest trio called the RMP.

The synergy between these three classes is particularly strong and has resulted in players not using much else online.

There was a lot of disappointment about that from the fans.

Those who wish to play as one of WoW’s many other classes have felt the need to adopt one of these classes in order to play online.

However, in an interview with GLHF, the Dragonflight developers acknowledged this issue and talked about how they hope the latest update can transform the metagame.

Lead Combat Systems Designer, Brian Holinka, shared with us the changes his team is making to the meta.

He says, “RMP is and has been a very strong composition with a lot of synergy simply because of what’s going on between Rogues and Mages.

“I’m still hearing calls from players for us to add Deep Freeze back to Mages.”

However, Holinka has chosen not to make any changes that would reduce the power of RMP, instead improving the power of other classes and combinations.

He continues, “We looked at what team compositions should counteract RMP, and how we can enable those classes to do so more effectively.

“Often players focus on nerfing this, nerfing that, and while that’s one way to fix an issue, it’s not always the best way.

“Instead, we want to pursue the question, ‘Why don’t these supposed counters actually counter?’

“Sometimes we come to the conclusion that a nerf is needed, but more often than not we’d rather build up the meters and bring the other classes up to that level instead.”

Holinka accepts that the changes his team made might not work as planned after the expansion launches.

He explains, “As always, the meta changes often in PvP and it’s very difficult for us to predict what top players will do.

“That’s why we added Rated Solo Shuffle as an option for players who want to push for higher ratings themselves, as it’s less dependent on team composition and more dependent on how well you can play your individual classes.

“We’ll be looking at how team comp power evolves and making a big contribution in future content updates to shake up the meta and balance things out as much as possible.”

It appears that RMP will continue to dominate for now, but that other classes could take the top spot once Dragonflight launches.
