How the brain ages and why do humans evolve? dementia is still a mystery. But there’s some interesting research that will hopefully shed some light on that – and how beets can boost our gray matter.

More than 25,000 people over the age of 40 have signed up for the PROTECT project, an innovative online study that tracks how perceptions change over time.

All you have to do is complete the annual tests of memory, reasoning, and attention. And some people will be chosen to drink beetroot juice to see how it boosts brain health.

Research is being led by University of Exeter and King’s College London. One of its most intriguing projects is studying how beetroot juice affects brain function in older adults through the bacteria that live in our mouths.

We have hundreds of species of bacteria and other organisms that live in our mouths, called the oral microbiome, and they can be just as important as the gut. microbiota.

This is because they can play a role in the development of major diseases, including Alzheimer and other forms of dementia.

So, what’s so magical about beets? The key ingredient is nitrate, which our oral microbiota turns into nitric oxide. This plays an important role in the transmission of information between cells and in the regulation of blood vessels.

As we age, nitric oxide production decreases, leading to poorer vascular (blood vessel) and cognitive (brain) health. We can get dietary nitrates from vegetables and green leaves, but we rarely eat enough.

Previous research by Exeter found that drinking beetroot juice increased the microbiome in the mouth, indicating higher levels of nitric oxide, which means a reduced risk of disease and inflammation. Professor Anni Vanhatalo, of the University of Exeter, said: “The oral microbiome is being recognized as an exciting avenue for cognitive health research.

“Our study wanted to see if beetroot juice enhanced brain function. If so, it could help detect dementia risk and lead to personalized diets that stimulate the oral microbiome in ways that could prevent or delay cognitive decline. awake in old age”.

For the trial, 60 participants will be recruited through the PROTECT project. Half will be sent a beetroot juice supplement and the rest will receive a special beetroot juice that has removed dietary nitrates, to act as a control.

All will perform cognitive tests at the start and end of the 12-week period, as well as provide saliva samples to detect any changes in their oral microbiomes.

This study may reveal the value of supplements for cognitive health.
