Scientists claim in a new study that drinking two or more cups of black tea a day could reduce a person’s risk of death by up to 13 percent.
The study, conducted and published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, included 498,043 participants aged between 40 and 69 and was part of the UK Biobank, a database resource containing health information on nearly half a million people in the UK.
Participants completed a baseline questionnaire between 2006 and 2010 and were followed for a median of 11.2 years. The researchers also looked at information about the subjects’ tea consumption, as they self-reported how much they drank.
The results of the study found that of the participants who reported drinking tea regularly, 89 percent consumed black tea.
Compared to people who reported not drinking any tea at all, participants who drank black tea had a 9 to 13 percent lower risk of death.
Higher tea consumption, which is two cups a day or more, has also been linked to a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, and stroke.
The study also found that higher tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of mortality, regardless of the temperature of the tea, how much milk or sugar was in it, and what genetic variations influenced the ability to absorb caffeine.
While the results suggest that tea can be part of a healthy diet, there were some limitations to the study, as the serving size of each cup of tea and the caffeine content in it were not evaluated.
During an interview with timeone of the study’s researchers, Maki Inoue-Choi, an epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute, said, “The association between tea consumption and cardiovascular mortality could drive the association between tea consumption and all-cause mortality.”
Inoue-Choi also acknowledged that while the results may encourage people to drink more tea, they “should not change how many cups of tea are drunk daily based on these results.”
