The Queensland Department for Roads and Transport has created an intersection quiz that asks Australian drivers if they think they can turn right after the traffic light changes.

In the situation, the orange car was moving into the intersection when the light was green but while waiting for the traffic stop, it turned red.

Many motorists are unsure of what the law really means when turning at a red light – and road users in the UK may experience similar confusion.

Drivers are not allowed to cross a solid white stop line unless the traffic light turns green or amber and they cannot stop safely.

Motorists are also asked not to move into an intersection unless there is enough room for them to safely cross the intersection on the other side.

But vehicle drivers are allowed to move into the intersection to turn right.

And if the lights change while still in the junction, they may be forced to turn on a red light.

Rule 176 of the Highway Code states: “You MUST NOT move forward over a white line while a red light is on.

“Only move forward when the traffic light is green if you have enough room to safely cross the intersection or you are about to turn right. If the traffic light is not working, treat the situation as if you were going. Cross the junction with no signs and proceed carefully.”

“When you’re waiting for your turn, always be on the lookout for ‘ambitious gamblers’ coming your way and don’t turn around until you’re absolutely certain it’s safe to do so.”
