Drivers face a £100 fine for a very common driving offense under the Highway Code

This comes as a set of new ones traffic regulations Rules were rolled out across the UK this year.

There are no specific law prohibiting companies – overtaking a car on the left – but if you do it recklessly you can be hit with three penalty points and a hefty fine.

The penalty would be for careless driving or driving without due care and attention.

Rule 268 The Highway Code states: “In congestion situations where adjacent lanes are moving at similar speeds, traffic in the left lane can sometimes be faster than traffic in the right.

“In these conditions, you can keep up with traffic in your lane, even if it means overtaking traffic in the right lane.

“Don’t weave in and out of the lane to overtake.”

If traffic is congested and everyone is moving at similar speeds, you may be able to commit to keeping up with traffic in your lane.

This also applies when you overtake vehicles in the right lane.

However, you should not squirm in and out of lanes to progress.

In the UK, this means overtaking the slower-moving vehicle on the left.

It’s most common on highways because there is more than one lane in the same direction.
