According to the experts at CarMoney, there were a whopping 36,000 searches for ‘what’s my tire pressure?’ last year, which is good people are checking, as flat tires can result in a £2,500 fine and multiple penalties.

They said: “Low tire pressure is dangerous because it can cause a burst – which at speed can be fatal.

“Faulty tires can also result in a £2,500 fine and three penalty points per tyre, so check your tire pressure regularly and be sure to check the optimum pressure for your specific tire type.

All you have to do is the 20 test – stick a 20 in the tyre’s groove, if the outer edge of the coin is visible this is a sign the tread is too low and a new tire is needed .

Thousands of people have not only checked their tyres, but also searched how to change wiper blades, how to change the oil and what to do about windscreen scratches – problems with all of these issues could also see drivers fined between £100 and £100 £2,500.

Andrew Marshall, Marketing & Partnerships Manager at CarMoney adds: “Keeping on top of car maintenance can feel like a chore, but if problems aren’t addressed quickly they can prove dangerous. Regular services will not only identify potential early problems, but they can also help you save money and avoid costly repairs later.

“Simple steps like checking tire tread with 20p can even save motorists from a fine. Always seek professional advice if there are problems with the vehicle that could endanger your safety and that of other road users.”
