DRIVING Coach Mike Shyne was left “speechless” after his complete makeover on The Style Counselors.
The hugely successful Style Counselors is back for a third season with fashion and beauty blogger Suzanne Jackson returning to lead.
This season Suzanne features a whole bunch of different Style Advisors – including the inimitable Eileen Smith – who, across different episodes, take on their latest trends.
Tonight, the business owner met 50-year-old Mike Shyne from Castleconnell in Co. Limerick.
He’s the first man to make a makeover on the show and he says he desperately needs Suzanne’s help.
Mike is an ambulance driving instructor, a job he loves. He usually wears sportswear to work.
He has a tracksuit bottom for every day of the week and hasn’t worn a pair of jeans in 20 years but he wants to try harder.
He has been married to his wife Liz for 14 years and they have 3 children.
Mike loves to make people laugh and while he takes care of himself to exercise in his barn, he doesn’t really show all his hard work with the clothes he wears.
Liz said he has a great physique and she gets tired when he wears sportswear every day.
Mike doesn’t own a suit and often borrows his 85-year-old father’s suits for weddings and family gatherings.
When the influencer asked Mike where his official shoes were, Mike replied, “Daddy got them today.”
Laughing, the businesswoman said: “You’re making fun of me! So you and your 85-year-old dad share a pair of shoes?”
During his time in captivity, Mike did a lot of work on his mental health and talking about it was something he wanted to highlight.
Mike wanted Suzanne to help him break out of his current fashion and rock Liz’s socks with a dandy new look for her 40th birthday.
He explains: “It’s about time I started saying yes to life. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.
“I’m tired of being a prisoner in my own clothes.”
Mike explained that he wanted to “do something to surprise” his wife as she often said he was “like the eye candy from 20 years ago”.
In the end, he opted for a beautiful navy blue jacket along with some black trousers and a white shirt underneath the jacket.
After seeing himself all done with his hair cut and makeup, Mike fumbled for words.
He said: “I didn’t expect that. Thank you very much, Suzanne.
“I can’t get over the difference there. I’m at a loss for words. I think that would mean a lot to Liz, she’ll be happy to see that.
“I come here, I think I’m getting dressed – I’ve got so much more.
“I’ve been taught to take care of myself, I’ve been taught that it’s okay to take care of yourself and feel like you’re worth taking care of yourself sometimes.”
Mike’s wife, Liz, was delighted with his new look as she said: “He just wanted to show me what it was like before things went bad for him before he did. He’s so busy and overworked. I’m so proud of him, he did a great job.”
