“Dropship” kills at least 7, several are missing

15 inches of rain caused heavy loss of life and property damage in Italy’s Marche region, and by the late hours of Thursday at least seven people had reportedly died and many more were missing when rescue operations began.

Disastrous flooding, resulting from hours of rain, swept away dozens of vehicles as water flooded roads in the central Italian provinces. Stunned local authorities said they didn’t expect such a sudden “water bomb,” Reuters reported.

The municipality of Catiano, in the province of Pesaro Urbino, experienced a record-breaking 16 inches of rain, according to TDPel Media, after the Liguria region, which received 19 inches of rainfall in October 2021.

Videos shared on Twitter paint a chilling picture of the gushing floodwaters pouring into the affected areas.

Multiple Italian regions have been hit by multiple storms following the European heatwave. In addition to Marche, other regions affected by storms are Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, Fruili Venezia Guilia, Lombardy, Liguria and Molise.

This is an evolving story, check back for updates.
