Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann says HBO’s The Last of Us TV show “will be the best and most authentic game adaptation.”
In conversation with the New Yorker (Many Thanks, comic book), Druckmann said he hopes the show will “bring that video game curse to bed,” though screenwriter Craig Mazin conceded that it’s “not the highest bar in the world” for making a great adaptation given some games like Assassin’s Creed to become. have “impenetrable” storylines.
“I love the ability to wander around in Skyrim, doing nothing,” Mazin said, before adding that “that’s untranslatable!” In contrast, however, he said that “The Last of Us was always a story where history comes first”.
After acknowledging the “troubled” history of Naughty Dog’s adaptations — including the Uncharted film, which Druckmann says is “funny” — Druckmann and Mazin discussed how the show came about, with the latter musing that ” a person dying should be very different than watching pixels die” and that the focus should be on the story, not the plot.
“Joel’s ability to dodge bullets is the least important thing,” Mazin said. Incidentally, that’s where video game adaptations have so often gone wrong – they try to replicate the action. It’s just the wrong medium. That’s that. That’s that.”
The interview also describes how the couple reflected on “the toll Joel’s life would have had on him physically.”
“So he’s hard of hearing because of a gunshot in one side. Every time he gets up his knees hurt,” Druckmann said, and Mazin added, “I think there’s a tone that Tom Cruise can do anything in. But I like my middle-aged middle-aged people.”
How does Druckmann think fans will react to the show?
“I think it will change things,” Druckmann said. “Sometimes adjustments didn’t work because the source material wasn’t strong enough. Sometimes they didn’t work because the people working on them didn’t understand the source material.” He also revealed that his next project will be “structured more like a TV show.”
HBO’s TV adaptation of Naughty Dog’s series debuts next month. This adaptation, starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, opens January 15 in the US, which makes for a January 16 launch here in the UK on Sky Atlantic.
