Drunk man arrested for safety reasons after falling over in street

A drunk man who fell in the street after being evicted from a downtown diner has been arrested for his own safety.

Atrick Greene (51) has been fined €200 by Dublin District Court for public intoxication.

Greene, who is of no fixed address, had pleaded not guilty but did not appear in court for the hearing of his case.

The court heard Gardaí were called to a snack bar on Amiens Street on October 18 last year.

The accused refused to leave, who saw that the Gardaí was in a heavily intoxicated state and unable to stand upright. He was escorted off the premises and was still struggling to stand upright outside.

He fell while trying to walk away and was arrested for his own safety.

Judge Bryan Smyth found him guilty after hearing the prosecution’s case. Greene had 20 criminal convictions.

The defendant was an alcoholic, vulnerable and destitute, his attorney Holly Laher said.

Separately, Greene was found not guilty of a similar charge after Gardaí allegedly found him drunk on the floor of a bus on Ballybough Road ahead of the Ed Sheeran concert at Croke Park on April 23. Drunk man arrested for safety reasons after falling over in street
