Drunk passenger causes riot in flight, hits cabin crew [Video]

A drunk passenger caused a riot and allegedly bit a cabin crew member’s finger on a flight to Jakarta. He also hit the cabin crew members, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.

The incident happened on a Turkish Airlines flight flying from Istanbul to Jakarta on Oct. 12, Free Press Journal reported. Video of the entire brawl between the drunk passenger and the cabin crew was captured by another traveler on the flight.

The passenger was identified as 48-year-old Muhammad John Jaiz Boudewijn, a pilot for Indonesian airline Batik Air, a subsidiary of Lion Air Group. Boudewijn was reportedly drunk on the Boeing 777 and was told by cabin crew to remain calm during the flight. However, he reacted angrily to the request of the cabin crew and even bit one of the flight attendants on the finger, India Today reported.

The now viral video shows ugly scenes of punches and kicks between the Indonesian passenger and cabin crew members. In the video, the passenger can be seen hitting a flight attendant who appears to be holding plastic handcuffs. The flight attendant retaliates by throwing a few kicks at the passenger. At that moment, other members of the cabin crew rush in to bring the situation under control.

The brawl resulted in the 11-hour flight being diverted after nine hours in the air and making an emergency landing at Kualanamu Airport in Medan, the capital of Indonesia’s North Sumatra province.

“It had to land at Kualanamu Airport because there was a passenger who caused a scene by causing a disturbance,” Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Chief Sigit Dani Setiyono told local media.

“Turkish Airlines dropped off the injured Indonesian passenger at Kualanamu Airport,” a spokesman for the Jakarta Metro Police said. “Indonesian citizen suspected of being intoxicated is being treated at Kualanamu Health Clinic.”

Lion Air also confirmed the identity of Boudewijn as their employee. However, according to a local news outlet, it confirmed that its actions do not reflect the company’s values.

The incident came days after a female passenger verbally abused cabin crew and threw a water bottle at a passenger on a flight to New York after she was asked to get off the plane. The woman quarreled with cabin crew after being asked to take her dog off her lap during the flight.
