Poor oral health can lead to serious problems elsewhere in the body – and conversely, dry mouth can be a sign that something is wrong elsewhere.

It’s a very common symptom, but one we should never ignore, says a leading dentist.

While it’s usually benign — we often don’t produce as much saliva as we age, and dry mouth can often be linked to snoring, medication, smoking, or drinking too much alcohol — the symptom can be a warning sign of severe ones Diseases like diabetes or stroke and even HIV.

dr Azad Eyrumlu, from leading private dental company Banning Dental Group, says our bodies are incredibly complicated and different parts are intimately connected, although we may not always realize it.

He says: “A dry mouth can be a sign that something is wrong elsewhere. This can manifest itself through symptoms such as a sticky feeling in the mouth, a dry or sore throat, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or even bad breath.

“Certain health conditions such as stroke, diabetes or Alzheimer’s can present themselves in this way, while these symptoms can also be an indicator of an autoimmune disease such as HIV or Sjogren’s syndrome.”

dr Eyrumlu added: “When you visit a dentist, we don’t just look at your oral health. We are also trained to recognize certain broader issues with your overall health. It’s important to keep a close eye on your own health and if you notice persistent dry mouth symptoms, you need to discuss this with your GP.”

Xerostomia is a condition where our salivary glands don’t produce enough saliva to keep our mouth moist. Saliva plays a key role in oral health as it helps neutralize acids produced by bacteria and also washes away food particles.

It is important for preventing tooth decay and also contains important enzymes that help with the digestive process and ensure our body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs.

It is recommended to visit a dentist every six months to ensure that your oral hygiene is in good working order and to keep an eye on any developing problems.
