The car drivers left and gathered friends and family from Dublin Airport will have to pay to do so after the airport operator gives the green light to create a new paid pick-up and drop-off area.
Ingal County Council has granted planning permission to DAA for infrastructure installation and internal road changes at the airport to enable the implementation of the new toll zone plan at T1 and T2.
Yesterday, an airport spokeswoman said the decision to charge car drivers to shuttle family members and friends was part of its sustainability momentum.
“As part of our sustainability program, the new system aims to reduce car journeys to and from the airport and encourage passengers to use more public transport.
“The commercial funds raised by the new system will be the basis for sustainability initiatives at the airport, including a proposed solar farm, parking and fleet transformation. shuttle our staff from diesel to low-emission vehicles and install additional point-of-charge electric vehicle charging.
“The free pick-up and drop-off option will continue to be available once new areas have been introduced in a new dedicated area in the Express Red long-term car park.
“ There will be special provisions for people with reduced mobility.”
The spokesman said the system will be idle for the upcoming summer and construction will take place in the second half of 2022.
Licenses for key program components are valid for 5 years as the development site is required to build MetroLink.
