Dublin has been ranked as one of the least environmentally friendly cities in Europe

A new survey has named Dublin one of the least sustainable city break destinations in Europe.

The survey, conducted by luggage storage app Bounce, analyzed 28 popular cities for tourists based on factors such as the number of sustainable hotels, use of public transport and air quality.

With an overall sustainability score of 6.98 out of 10, Berlin came out on top, ahead of Stockholm (6.93) and Zurich (6.56).

Dublin (2.91) ranks fourth among “the least sustainable destinations in Europe,” says Bounce, just ahead of Belgrade (2.75), Athens (1.64) and Rotterdam (1.48).

Dublin scored particularly poorly for its green energy performance and for its number of eco-friendly hotels.

Like many travel companies, Bounce regularly conducts surveys to promote its brand. Ireland recently topped a list in separate surveys the safest places for women traveling alone this summer for example.

The green city methodology was based on a number of factors – for example, carbon footprints were sourced from the Global Gridded Model of Carbon Footprints (GGMCF), while sustainable hotel ratings were calculated based on the number of hotels listed on Booking. com lists the “Sustainable Travel Real Estate” filter.

Dublin has seen positive developments in sustainable tourism – Dublin Convention Center has been dubbed ‘the world’s first carbon neutral convention center’ and Dublin Bay has been designated a Biosphere by UNESCO, for example.

Newer hotels have also innovated, such as the carbon neutral Wren Urban Nest and the Iveagh Garden Hotel, which harvests energy from a river flowing 50m below Harcourt Street.

In another sustainability measure, the Global Destination Sustainability IndexDublin’s ranking fell from 71 per cent in 2019 to 61 per cent in 2021. Both Cork and Belfast ranked higher.

Other polls this summer have seen time out Add Capel Street to a list of the coolest streets in the world and the UK Post Office Money ranks Dublin as Europe’s fourth most expensive city break.
