Dune: Spice Wars Art Director Jeremy Vitry talks about challenges and the reinterpretation of a renowned IP

With Early Access on April 26th comes a new developer interview with Dune: Spice Wars Jeremy Vitry, the game’s Art Director, on creating a distinctive style for a game with such a well-known IP, and how the design has evolved over time from concept to current form.

During the early concept stages, the first art Vitry created was a large-scale overview of Arrakis, which also included a mockup of the overall concept for the Spice Wars gameplay. There were all sorts of changes later, but the initially stylized concept art retained some influence. He describes a process that started from a stylized look and the general feel of Shiro Games, but then incorporated some art deco-inspired elements that changed the user interface but also added touches to characters and parts of the world, making this stand out of.

dune is such a world-renowned IP, but the team wanted to create something original in it without relying on others dune influence of the media. Vitry notes, “Another big part of that challenge was the fact that everyone already has their own idea of what dune-related things would look like, so the pressure to make something not too crazy yet still appealing to the players that fit into that universe was definitely a hard push!”

Working on a well-known IP brought with it some limitations as to what they could do with the characters or the world, but these also provided some guidance and, he says, took them out of their comfort zone in having to conform to what what was there.

Some of the other challenges involved creating interesting environments on a familiar desert planet. Additionally, the worlds are procedurally generated as you play, so making the worlds more varied and engaging is a bit more complex.
