Dutch Gold’s genius hack to bypass Ireland’s minimum unit wine pricing and sell four cans for €5

Brewery owners DUTCH Gold have come up with a clever solution to bypass Ireland’s minimum alcohol pricing, allowing them to sell four cans for as little as 5 euros.

The new minimum wine pricing means that some cans that sell for €18 have now doubled in price to at least €39.77, but Dutch Gold has found a way around this.

Dutch Gold changed the percentage of alcohol per can, to reduce the cost of a four-bottle pack of beer.

The iconic beer arrived in Ireland in 1995 and seems to be admired for its low price.

Dutch Gold drinkers describe the beer as “clear flavor and excellent value.”

Originally containing 4% alcohol by volume, the brewers have now reduced the percentage to 3.5 – making the four packs very affordable.

According to the Dutch Gold Facebook page, “Dutch Gold is a brand that has adapted to the evolution of the market and made it one of the leading brands in the market.”

HOW MUCH IS THE COST?

This change means that a can will cost around €1.22 instead of €1.58 per can if no changes are made.

This adds up to €4.88 for the four-person package, instead of €6.32.

Minimum unit prices were introduced on January 4 to deal with alcohol and beer related issues.

In Ireland, a standard drink with 10 grams of alcohol, currently costs one euro.

The Sheffield Wine Research Group predicts the new price will reduce alcohol consumption among heavy drinkers by 15 per cent and those who drink according to low-risk alcohol guidelines will drink 3 per cent less.

Ireland is one of the few countries recommending minimum wine pricing, along with Wales in 2020 and Scotland in 2018.

Many people took to social media to cheer on the Dutch Gold owners for their “bogus” move.

One Twitter user said: “Dutch Gold has dropped alcohol volume up 3.5% so they can be sold for €5 hahahahahaha. ”

Many users responded to the news saying “Life finds a way”, “power moves” and “It’s not Dutch – you’re paying too much.”
