DWP Issues Social Media Alert To Universal Credit Applicants Amid New Raid Plans

The warning applies to anyone with a social media account as a new 2,000-strong DWP team is launched that aims to crack down on benefit fraud.

That “Fighting fraud in the social system‘ Plan is being introduced by the Government Department in hopes of halting around £2 billion in losses over the next five years.

Workers will review the circumstances of Universal Credit claims when they are reported by the DWP amid suspects who have made false statements, including those who may have broken into the system during the pandemic.

Investigators can also scour social media accounts and your online profiles for pictures, location check-ins, and other evidence to help fight fraud.

It comes after more than 600 people across the UK were convicted of benefit fraud last year.

The DWP defines fraud as “a person receiving government benefits to which they are not entitled or willingly failing to report a change in their personal circumstances”.
