€40,000 worth of food and clothing was distributed to Ukrainian refugees at Maynooth College

Food and clothing vouchers worth around €40,000 were handed over to Ukrainian refugees at Maynooth University today.

The initiative was run by Irish Red Cross volunteers and aims to support people’s immediate needs.

Vouchers for adults and children and vouchers for two local pharmacies were distributed today, as well as packets of new Lego for the children.

The Irish Red Cross said distribution days were a “key activity” and a “very practical” way to support people’s immediate needs. The charity said this is the first day of distribution of many.

The vouchers were provided by Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal funds donated by the Irish people and the organization was supported by lawyers from the Ukraine Irish Legal Alliance.

A medical HSE “SafetyNet” clinic was also held on the university campus, where a doctor and nurse were available to treat people with urgent medical problems.

To date, €38 million has been donated to the Irish Red Cross by the Irish public and businesses since the start of the Russian invasion, and this money is being channeled into three different areas of spending.

So far, 15.2 million euros have been spent on emergencies, practical and medical support in Ukraine and the surrounding countries.

A further €3 million is being used to support the needs of refugees in Ireland, of which over €400,000 has been spent to date and this spending is set to accelerate in the coming weeks.

As this crisis has no defined end date, the Irish Red Cross has planned to use €19.8 million to fund interventions over two years in Ukraine.

This money will be used for rebuilding and rebuilding livelihoods, as well as medical programs, cash assistance for returning Ukrainians, and restoring vital infrastructure such as restoring freshwater connections and clearing landmines. €40,000 worth of food and clothing was distributed to Ukrainian refugees at Maynooth College
