EA is funding trips for competitive Apex Legends players after community backlash

Following strong community feedback on Twitter, Reddit, and other social media platforms, EA will cover travel expenses for all competitive teams attending Year 2 Apex Legends events. This all happened within 24 hours and makes event achievement much more realistic for some of the world’s best players.

To date, only the top five teams from APAC North, NA, and EMEA have had their expenses paid by Apex Legends publishers, as have only the top 2 teams from APAC South and SA.

As you can imagine, this put additional financial stress on certain teams who, until this policy change, had to fund the trip to Stockholm, Sweden for the Split 2 playoffs on April 29th. For teams based continents away, the expectation of having to pay for their entire team plus coaching staff would have burned a significant hole in their pocket.

But now that those costs are covered, that worry disappears completely. In addition to traveling to Sweden at EA’s expense, teams can go to the ALGS Championship in a similar fashion provided they qualify for the finals.

One can only hope that this trend continues in the third year of competitive Apex Legends events. While the postponement is great news, it stipulates that only travel expenses for the remaining second year events will be covered. Given the backlash, it’s hard to imagine going back to the old plan, but it’s still worth keeping an eye on.
