EA Sports’ spin-off from FIFA was “the perfect storm” for eFootball

The very public divorce of FIFA and EA Sports has been the talking point of football gaming fans as FIFA games will be rebranded as EA Sports FC starting next year.

The pair were partners for 30 years and created the most popular soccer franchise for gaming, but as of next year, the goal is wide open.

No one knows what to expect from the new series, although the gameplay producer said it will be quite a bit more of the same, leaving the door wide open for a new game to step in.

Games from new studios like Goals and UFL are hoping to grab the spotlight when they release.

However, another name is hoping to throw his hat in the ring; Konami’s PES rebrand, eFootball.

GLHF spoke to David Monk, Senior Partnerships and Activations Manager at eFootball, about where he thinks eFootball stands.

He explained: “I think if you look objectively at the landscape of the football simulation category, you now have a perfect storm for newcomers.

“They’ve expanded consumer choices in mobile gaming, and console gaming is obviously more accessible.

“With the release of the new generation of consoles and these new bases of technology available to users as well as Android.”

As mobile technology like eFootball continues to improve, the free-to-play model is becoming increasingly popular.

He says: “A lot more free-to-play games have come out in the non-football sim category as well, and more than we can imagine will obviously come out in football sim as well.

“So you’re looking at all these ingredients everywhere – it’s the perfect storm for new publishers and new developers to jump into the simulation category.”

If now is the perfect time for competitors to enter the football gaming market, what will make eFootball stand out from the crowd?

Monk says, “Not to be cliche here, it’s important for us to just focus on what we can bring value to these end users.

“And what we can leverage at all stages of development and technology to ensure that all of these new capabilities, technology base and business model benefit end users.

“For us, this stage is really just about focusing on what we’re focusing on and not being distracted or thinking about what other companies are doing.”
