A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead in a property.
The woman, in her 60s, was found dead at the Connaught Road address in Eastbourne after police and paramedics were called to the property.
A 59-year-old Eastbourne man known to the woman remains in police custody.
Sussex Police Chief Inspector Detective Emma Vickers said: “We understand that this incident will cause shock and concern in the community, but I would like to reassure people that a thorough investigation is underway and we are not looking for anyone else at this stage to be related in order to. We believe this is an isolated matter with no threat to the general public.
“The investigation is progressing rapidly and the public can expect an increased police presence in the area while our investigation continues.
“This took place in a very busy, central location in Eastbourne and we are asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or unusual in the area over the course of the weekend, particularly between 7.45am and 10am on Sunday 18 December to report with us.”
The woman’s relatives have been informed and are supported by specialist officials.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene around 6:45 p.m. Sunday, December 18, out of concern for the woman’s well-being.
A heavy police presence was seen at the scene on Monday December 19 as a cordon was set up outside the property.
Several police cars were present and a cordon was put up to shield the property.
Forensic scientists were also seen at the scene of the investigation.
An appeal has now been filed and witnesses are being asked to come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to report it to police online or call 101 quoting Operation Dorsal. Alternatively, you can report information anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers online or by calling 0800 555 111.
