Two teenagers have been arrested after reports of young people fighting each other with umbrellas near a shopping mall.
Police responded to the “heinous” incident, which took place on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
A group of youths reportedly fought each other with what they believed to be stolen umbrellas.
Two 17-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of fighting following the altercation on Terminus Road in Eastbourne, near The Beacon shopping centre.
Eastbourne Neighborhood Police Inspector Sarah Taylor said: “This was a heinous incident that took place on one of the busiest days of the year at peak times.
“The town center was packed with families and children doing their Christmas shopping and this altercation may have caused alarm and distress.
“We want the public to know that we will not tolerate such incidents and will catch those responsible.
“We have already made two arrests and are doing everything we can to identify the rest of the group.
“The public can also expect an increased police presence in the city center following this incident.”
Both teenagers were released on conditional bail after the incident around 4pm on Tuesday.
The terms of their bail, which lasts three months, say they are not allowed to visit Terminus Road or The Beacon shopping mall.
Sussex Police have stepped up their patrols in Eastbourne town center to discourage anti-social behavior over the Christmas period.
The measures are part of a broader public safety campaign aimed at tackling anti-social behavior in the area.
An appeal was launched to identify the rest of the group involved in the altercation.
Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who has video footage or cell phone footage of the incident.
Any witnesses to the altercation can report information online or call 101, quoting serial number 825 dated 12/20.
Anyone with crime and disorder concerns are encouraged to contact the Neighborhood Policing Team online or by calling 101.
