EastEnders fans were left speechless during Monday’s BBC broadcast, when Ricky Mitchell made a rare surprise appearance alongside half-sister Amy.
When the movie returned to screens, some fans were baffled by the youngster’s appearance as they believed he had been recast on Albert Square.
Ricky, the son of Sam Mitchell and Jack Branning, lives with Jack and his half-sister Amy after Sam leaves him in Jack’s care and returns to her life in Portugal.
On BBC One last night, businessman and detective Jack Branning met Callum Highway police officer and his husband Ben Mitchell.
The trio met by chance at Kathy’s Café, where Jack appeared with his two children, Ricky and Amy.
When Jack teased Callum about his recent modeling gig, eagle-eyed soap fans spotted his kids picking a cake to share and post on Twitter to share their amazement at seeing Ricky tower over his sister.
One fan posted: “Is that a new Ricky actor or has he just been out of the picture?”
Another commented: “Oh my god Ricky has been recast?!”
A third said they mistook Ricky for Walford youngster Will Mitchell, writing: “I thought Ricky was Will for a moment.”
A quarter wrote: “Ricky is out with a new head, Sam Mitchell’s return must be very close!”
But the character of Ricky has been taken over by the same actor, Frankie Day, since 2018, who took over the youngster from Henri Charles, who played Ricky for two years.
Sibling duo Amy and Ricky haven’t been on BBC screens for a while, as they last appeared on Albert Square in the soap’s Christmas special.

Although he’s stepped away from all the movies in recent months, Ricky will be pushed to center stage as fans eagerly await his mother’s return as Kim Medcalf takes on the role of Sam Mitchell. next week.
Sam left her son Ricky with his father Jack in 2016, unable to cope with single motherhood.
The actress, surnamed Kim, said she was “emotional” to be stepping back into Sam’s place after more than 15 years away from the character.
“I got a call from EastEnders late last year asking me if I wanted to come back and come back as Sam Mitchell,” she said. “I was very emotional and it didn’t take long to say yes. I was at home when I got the call and it was a really lovely surprise.
“I watched the show over and over again when I could, so it was really emotional for me to be asked again.”
EastEnders airs Monday through Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
