EASTENDERS viewers all had the same question about Ben Mitchell after he suddenly decided to hide his homosexuality.

The mechanic – who is played by actor Max Bowden in the BBC drama – admits he is struggling to cope following a fellow attack earlier this month.

In tonight’s episode, Ben reveals that he’s regularly appalled about same-sex abuse – and has had enough.

“It’s not about Paul and it’s not about me not being able to protect Cal,” he said.

“If Cal goes to the store to buy milk, why should he listen to Suki Panesar tell us how unnatural we feel?

“At least Suki has the courage to say what everyone is thinking. I can’t go out without someone saying something or looking at me a certain way or getting into a fight.

“Callum, your brother really beat me up on that proud first day. This is normal.

“Why is it that every time I call my husband with no answer, my first thought is ‘he’s been killed’?

“What happened to Paul was not just a tragedy. I’m tired of fear.

“Imagine what it feels like walking down the street holding the hand of the one you love and knowing it would put you in immediate danger. I can not do it “.

He later told Pam about the homophobia he faced and she admitted she wished she had prevented Paul’s murder by stopping him from showing up.

It leads to Ben making a devastating decision – to go back to the closet and hide his marriage to Callum.

“No more hanging around with rainbow badges, no more kissing in public, no more holding hands,” he said.
