EastEnders: Sam Mitchell returns to the square

EastEnders fans were a bit confused on Tuesday night, when Sam Mitchell reunited with her young son Richard, better known as Ricky, but she didn’t realize it.

In fact, after six years away from Walford, Sam couldn’t even recognize his child until his ex Jack Branning revealed who he was.

Ricky also doesn’t realize the woman he’s talking to is his mother, after being abandoned by her six years ago.

Both characters are played by different cast members than those who portrayed Sam and the boy Ricky when they were in the Square the last time together, so maybe that’s why!

Ricky has grown up so much lately, even viewers are stunned to see how different he looks.

EastEnders fans were a bit confused on Tuesday night, when Sam Mitchell was reunited with his young son Richard, known as Ricky.

But they were a bit confused as to how and why Sam didn’t realize she was talking to her own son.

It looks like they haven’t been in contact since 2016, when Sam abandoned her son and left him with Jack, who has raised him ever since.

So when Sam arrived at the Square and had Ricky kick a ball in her head, she wasted no time threatening him.

Ricky also didn’t realize the woman he was talking to was his mother

Ricky quickly informs Jack’s father who blew up his soccer ball, and he painfully realizes it was his ex, Sam.

When he steps forward and asks why she’s back in Walford, Sam tells the clock that Ricky is sitting with him and his partner Denise.

Then she connected and asked, “Is that Richard?” which Jack has confirmed it is.

As Sam admits, “I didn’t recognize him,” he told her: “Yes, kids change a lot in six years.”

Sam doesn’t seem too interested in meeting Ricky, and soon refuses to reunite – while Denise and Jack will be torn about whether to tell their son who Sam really is.

But viewers are a bit confused about how Ricky won’t recognize his mother, since he’s lived with her for six years.

He was in her care from birth until moving to Walford in 2016, so fans are confident he’ll recognize her – and Sam will know who he is.

Reacting to the Instagram and Twitter footage, one fan asked: “How could she not recognize her own son?”

Another concurred: “Wait a minute, isn’t her son tough… how could she not realize it?????? What did I just watch.”

A third added: “How could she not recognize her son???” while another viewer said: “It’s unlikely it’s realistic that she doesn’t recognize her biological son. It’s been 6 years, not 60”.

The comments also continued to appear, with another tweet: “Wait, that’s not Ricky boy? Are you telling me Sam doesn’t recognize her own son and vice versa? How awkward? .”

EastEnders airs Monday through Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
