EastEnders will be eliminated for the first time in four consecutive weeknights in its 37-year history, going head-to-head with ITV competitor Emmerdale.

In a major schedule change, BBC Top soaps will receive their own slot at 7:30pm for each episode, Monday through Thursday.

What changes mean EastEnders will air for the first time on Wednesday night,
while the current Friday outing will be abandoned.

And in another move, fans of the drama will also get the chance to watch Doctors in prime time, as the daytime TV show will be repeated Monday through Thursday on BBC2 at 7pm. .

The changes, which come into effect next month, were sparked by ITV’s announcement that Opening the street is moving to an hour-long format three times a week while Emmerdale will be “stripped” for the whole week at 7:30pm.

EastEnders will be broadcast for four consecutive nights of the week

BBC bosses say they no longer worry about avoiding soap clashes because viewers can catch up iPlayer or watch BBC3 omnibus on weekends.

Similarly, viewers can watch Emmerdale and Coronation Street at another time using +1 channels or on demand via ITVHub.

A BBC source explained: “Bosses decided to change the schedule when ITV made their announcement. In the past, if there was a clash between films, the audience was the loser, but today TV viewers are different.

“It’s no longer about overnight ratings because they don’t reflect the real picture of who’s watching. You just look at the numbers watching EastEnders on iPlayer, the numbers are astounding.”

EastEnders remains one of BBC iPlayer’s most popular shows, with more than 285 million streams streaming in 2021.

BBC Studios Head of Drama Continuity, Kate Oates, told the Mirror: “We are delighted that from 7 March there will be regular new slots for EastEnders on BBC1 and Doctors on BBC2.

Both shows have a loyal following; and this new simplified schedule means it’s even easier for viewers to correct mistakes and watch whenever and wherever they choose on iPlayer.

“The 7 p.m. time period gives audiences a whole new opportunity to enjoy drama in Leatherbridge; while EastEnders’ new 7:30 p.m. time slot kicks off an extremely exciting week, when the killer Gray Atkins is finally revealed. ”

In the long-running storyline, the evil murderer Albert Square Gray – actor Toby-Alexander Smith – has been desperately trying to bury his long string of crimes but the walls have been closed since Christmas.

From early March, Coronation Street will air with three three-hour episodes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8-9pm while Emmerdale switches to a later slot Monday through Friday at 7: 30 p.m., with a special Thursday episode that’s twice as long.

Announcing the ITV changes last month, boss Kevin Lygo explained: “We know that, like all TV series, audiences are increasingly watching them whenever, and how. they choose. New scheduling means viewers can watch them live on TV one at a time, as well as on the ITV Hub, where they’re regularly featured on the most watched shows every month. ”

ITV’s changes were motivated by a desire to run an hour-long newscast from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., curated by Mary Nightingale.
