EastEnders star June Brown dies aged 95

Actress June Brown, who played the most beloved character Dot Cotton on EastEnders for more than three decades, has died aged 95.

Dot Cotton is a fan favorite and one of BBC magazine’s longest running characters, first appearing in the series in 1985, the year EastEnders was created.

She stayed until 1993, returning to play the same character from 1997 to 2020.

June has been associated with the soap-iconic status of BBC star Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell and died in 2020 aged 83 after suffering from dementia.

EastEnders legend June paid an emotional tribute to Dame Barbara after her death, telling how she wanted to see her again near the end of her life.

The couple remained in regular contact by phone even years after Barbara left Albert Square.

She said in a statement following Barbara’s death: “I think of Babs as she did when she came to EastEnders as Peggy Mitchell – small, bright, vibrant, beautiful, and people-friendly. She quickly became loved by all the actors.

“We have become great friends. We have an adjoining dressing room and she always pops in for coffee, and we go out to lunch together; she updated me with all the gossip. I wish we had more scenes together but our only scene was in her last episode, when Dot says goodbye to Peggy, knowing she’s dying. ”

June said the couple talked regularly on the phone after Dame Barbara left the soap.

She added: “During our last phone call, she asked me many times where I was – in the end I said ‘I’m at home’ and her comment was ‘I want to come home. yours”, but it’s too late for that. As long as I’m here, she’ll always be on my mind.”

But former soap executive Dominic Treadwell-Collins noted that it wasn’t always smooth sailing between the two actresses of the soap powerhouse, praising Barbara as “the best executive producer EastEnders has ever had. ” in the way that she usually directs the rest of the cast.

The show’s former host described how Dame Barbara “keeps the actors young forever”, recalling: “Once, June Brown yelled at us from her dressing room window: “Your plots are terrible.” Barbara grabbed her, took her upstairs and told her to apologize.”

After June’s death, an EastEnders spokesperson said there were “not enough words” to describe how much she was loved by the soap family.

In a statement, they said: “Her loving warmth, wit and great humor will never be forgotten.

“June has created one of the most iconic characters in Dot Cotton, not only in soap but also on British television, and having appeared in 2884 episodes, June’s remarkable performances have making for some of EastEnders’ greatest moments.”
