EastEnders star Bill Treacher dies aged 92

Bill Treacher, who played Arthur Fowler in EastEnders, has died aged 92.

The veteran actor was one of the original BBC cast members and appeared from 1985 to 1996.

He died on Saturday night after his health declined for some time.

A statement from his family said: “The family of actor Bill Treacher is saddened to announce that Bill passed away late Saturday night, November 5, 2022.

“He is 92 years old and his health has been declining for a while. He is deeply loved by his wife Kate, son Jamie and daughter Sophie.

“Bill is an excellent actor and a great husband and father, plus a very good human being. He will be very missed.

“The family respectfully requests privacy at this time.”

Treacher is married to Australian actress Katherine Kessey, with whom he shares two children and who are longtime residents of Suffolk.

In 2015, he said he had ataxia, a disorder that can affect coordination, balance and speech.

Treacher appeared in EastEnders until 1996, when his troubled character went to jail for a crime he didn’t commit.

After receiving a blow to the head during a violent match, he was released but later suffered a brain hemorrhage at his beloved trading site.

He died in the hospital, leaving the Fowler family heartbroken.

After his character was killed, Treacher had roles in The Bill and Casualty, and films such as The Musketeer (2001), Tale Of The Mummy (1998) and George And The Dragon (2004).

An EastEnders spokesman said: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Treacher.

“As one of our original cast members, Bill created a much-loved character in Arthur Fowler and, together with Wendy Richard, they created an iconic family in Fowlers who still remain. is the center of the movie.

“Bill left EastEnders in 1996, so it’s a real testament to both him and the character he created in Arthur that he’s still fondly thought of.

“Bill will always be remembered for his grace, sense of humor – with a smile that lit up the room – and more importantly, as a devoted family man to his wife and children.

“Bill will forever be loved by everyone at EastEnders and all those who loved to follow him. Rest in peace Bill and thanks for the memories. “

Todd Carty, who played Mark, Fowlers’ eldest son, said: “I am so sorry to hear of Bill’s passing, I have enjoyed working with him immensely. He is not only a great actor but also a kind and sincere man.
