EastEnders star Sam Mitchell’s off-screen confrontation of Kim Medcalf and Westbrook

Sam Mitchell is back in EastEnders – with a whole new face.

It’s been six years since Phil and Grant’s feisty little sister was in Albert Square, but much longer for actress Kim Medcalf to return, who returned to our screens in Monday night’s episode.

The 48-year-old was no stranger to Walford as she played Sam for three years before leaving in 2005, replacing original actress Daniella Westbrook.

Danniella, who was first cast in 1990, returned as Sam on two occasions between 2009 and 2016 but the bosses decided against bringing her back this time.

In a statement, Kim said: “When the BBC approached me last year to reprise the role of Sam, I was delighted.

“She’s an outstanding character and I can’t wait to return to The Square this spring and work with an amazing cast of both familiar and new faces.”

So what did Kim do during her time away from EastEnders?

Before landing the EastEnders gig, Kim studied law at the University of Bristol, then became an account manager selling soap powder for a pharmaceutical company.

But she quickly realized it wasn’t for her and pursued an acting career after taking a speech and drama course, getting her first job in 2001 in the musical One Touch of Venus.

She then auditioned for the role in EastEnders, but was completely unaware that the chosen character was Sam Mitchell.

During Danniella’s third shoot on the soap, her contract was not renewed by the BBC in late 1999 after the producers grew tired of her unreliability.

When they decided to bring Sam back two years later, Danniella was still struggling with off-screen issues so the EastEnders boss decided to reprise the role with a new actress.

They kept the character’s identity a secret, then confessed to Kim that they wanted her to play an iconic role.

Explaining how she discovered the role, Kim said, “They sat down with me and said ‘actually we’re not telling the 100% truth here, this. [audition] it’s not for… a new character at all, it’s for Sam Mitchell’s part. Do you know who she is?’ and I said, ‘Of course!’

She played this role for three years

Kim admitted she was apprehensive about taking on a role involving Danniella but was pleased with her opening storyline.

“It was scary to find out I would take on someone else’s character because you wonder if the public would accept it,” she said at the time. “I loved the show so I decided to join”

When the news was announced, Danniella supported her for her replacement by graciously saying, “I wish her all the luck in the world. It’s a great part and I’m sure she will. wonderful.”

After three years in the role, Kim left in 2005, then Danniella made a shocking return as Sam four years later.

Not much is known about Kim’s private life, but she was pictured with her husband Simon in 2013 at a Playhouse Theater in London.

Since leaving EastEnders, she has primarily focused on her stage career, appearing in theatrical versions of Margaret Atwood’s novel The Penelopiad and South Pacific.

In 2006, she had a critically acclaimed performance in the play Hay Fever alongside Judi Dench and appeared in The Vagina Monologues in 2008.

Danniella is the original Sam

But she’s not leaving television altogether, having had roles in the BBC drama The Missing in 2010, Harley Street in 2008 and Collateral in 2018.

Although they both make claims about the character of Sam, there is no evil relationship between Kim and Danniella, the two met face-to-face at an awards ceremony a decade ago.

Speaking last year, Danniella explained: “I’d never seen Kim before, so I went up to her on the red carpet and said, ‘Kim, I just wanted to say I’ve done this part well. I know it took you a lot of time backlash and everything because you came in, but you did a great job You are a very talented actress and thank you for keeping Sam Survive, keep her going’.

“She was a bit surprised and said, ‘Thank you very much’.”

Danniella expressed her disappointment on Twitter when she found out that Kim was returning as Sam and claimed no one from the soap had contacted her about being replaced – but made clear her problem she is with the boss.

The disgruntled actress wrote: “Wish Kim good luck at @BBCEastenders__ but again this poor woman has to recreate Samantha Mitchell almost twice my most recent return to the square. Smash it. go honey..x oh but that’s not it @ bbceastenders my legal team will be in touch.”

Kim has never ruled out returning to the show as she has always loved the character and watched it over and over again.

Kim always considers returning to soap

“However, my life took me in another direction,” she explains, “I worked a lot in theater and had a family, so I didn’t necessarily think it would be profitable.” , she told The Metro this month.

“Unbelievable [being back on Albert Square], how wonderful. It was a really surreal experience, like I went back in time 17 years. I know a lot of new things but everything feels so familiar. “

BBC series continuations, Kate Oates, revealed that she has been wanting to bring Sam back for a long time and promises to give the performance.

Sam will come into conflict with her brother’s current lover, Kat, his ex, Sharon, as well as Jack and Denise because she is Ricky’s biological mother.

“The Mitchells are one of the most iconic soap families, and I have long wanted to bring Sam back to the house,” explains Kate.

“With Phil potentially facing a long inner spell, Sam returns to Walford ready to claim what she sees as her rightful place in the Mitchell empire.

“But with a strong grudge against Kat, Sharon, Jack and Denise, including a few, her return is sure to be explosive…”

Sam has beef with most people

On Monday night, Sam turned his head as she walked into the jail and told the beaming Phil that it was good to be back.

But it’s clear that not everyone is pleased to see her in the latest early scenes, as Sharon shocks Sam with a glass of wine after Phil’s sister reveals exactly why she made the decision. back to Walford.

And Kim has revealed that more fiery scenes will be made in the coming months as she opens up about her character’s relationship with Sharon.

“Sharon is clearly very loyal to Phil and they have a special relationship. There’s a lot of temper between Sharon and Sam and when you throw Kat in that mix, it’s explosive,” Kim said.

“I think audiences are going to love this dynamic. It’s been fun to play with Letitia and Jessie, there are really some great scenes to come.”
