EastEnders to broadcast male postnatal depression plot when Stuart can’t bond with son

Stuart reluctantly agrees to treatment for the sake of his newborn son Roland – but he will struggle to bond with the child over the next few weeks on EastEnders

EastEnders: Stuart told wife Rainie he had breast cancer in January

EastEnders will air its first storyline about male postpartum depression as Stuart Highway struggles to bond with his son.

Over the past year, Stuart has been through his own health struggles after being diagnosed with breast cancer and initially refusing treatment.

However, he reluctantly agreed to treatment for the sake of his newborn son Roland.

In the coming weeks, however, Stuart will find it increasingly difficult to bond with Roland, leading him to question his love for his son.

The BBC soap is collaborating with PANDAS and Mind on the plot.

Annie Belasco, PANDAS Charity Lead, said: “PANDAS is delighted to hear that EastEnders intends to produce a storyline that highlights postpartum depression in men.

“We enjoyed counseling the team about the postpartum depression aspect of Stuart’s journey, which we feel will be relevant to many dads who are struggling to bond with their baby.

“Postpartum depression in fathers is still an unexplored and stigmatized area, which is why it is urgent to share the clear awareness that men can feel feeling unwell with symptoms of postpartum depression can seek the support they need at the outset.

“Full recovery of any low-grade perinatal mental illness is possible, with appropriate support.”

Alex Bushil, Head of Communications & PR at Mind, adds: “When people see mental health issues sensitively portrayed on screen, it raises awareness and encourages encourage people to seek support for their mental health.

“So it’s great to see EastEnders spend airing time exploring such an important issue. I hope this story helps highlight how depression can affect new dads like that. and encourage fathers to seek help if they need it. Whatever you’re going through, you’re not alone. And you deserve respect and support.”
