EasyJet aims for full capacity as slump boosts discount flights

EasyJet Plc said continued demand for flights should allow it to return to pre-pandemic capacity levels by next summer, even as rising inflation weighs on household incomes.

Early bookings for the second half from April “are looking positive”, with ticket prices for the Easter holiday higher than a year ago, EasyJet of Luton, England, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The airline said it will begin recruiting in the summer to avoid a repeat of this year’s industry-wide labor shortages.

Low-cost airlines like EasyJet are increasing capacity as the economy slows, in a bet that Europeans will continue to prioritize affordable holiday travel over other discretionary spending.

The British airline said this should help it attract more customers and increase margins while keeping costs in check.

“EasyJet does well in tough times,” Chief Executive Officer Johan Lundgren said in the press release. “Consumers will protect their vacations but look for value.”

After a record summer, EasyJet reduced its total pre-tax loss to £178m ($214m) for the year ended September 30, after saying last month the figure was between £170m and £190m.
