TWO friends caught up in the easyJet flight chaos have had to miss their graduation ceremony after being stranded 1,300 miles from home.
Paige Smith and her roommate Zach claim they got stranded there Majorca after their original flight to Manchester was canceled on the morning they were supposed to fly.
The couple awoke to the bad news last Friday after completing a brief getaway to the popular Spanish island.
The airline informed them that as they were allocated a hotel room for the night, their only option was to catch the next available flight the next day.
But devastatingly, the cancellation meant the two friends had to miss their long-awaited graduation party with friends.
Paige also claims that she “played around” her work shifts when she was due to meet with important clients.
She told that Manchester evening news: “Our original return flight was on Friday and we were due to return to Manchester Airport at 1:30pm and were planning to go to our friends graduation as all the people we live with are students.
“When I woke up I checked my email and saw that around 4am there was a message from easyJet telling us the flight had been cancelled.
“We had been rushing around that morning and were about to head to the airport when luckily I checked my email. Right off the bat we didn’t know what to do and I was supposed to be at work on Saturday too. “
Disappointed at missing their party, the two were told by easyJet that their next flight would be at 21:15 the next day.
However, the next day, Paige claims the airline’s mobile app kept predicting different departure times due to various delays.
The plane, which had been making other trips to and from Manchester Airport that day, was delayed after arriving at the airport later than planned due to “air traffic control restrictions”.
The couple only landed back in Manchester in the early hours of Sunday morning – two days later than planned.
Paige said, “At that point we just wanted to go home. easyJet was really good to be fair and their app was really easy to use so they could book us in another hotel, I just couldn’t help but think about delays as well Manchester airport might have something to do with it .
“When we woke up on Saturday morning, the app kept giving me different times and kept getting pushed back. But she still told us to check in at Palma airport at 7:15pm, so we had to do that to make sure.
“The plane was delayed arriving in Palma from Manchester and we didn’t take off until around 00:00 that evening.
“Thank God we only took hand luggage with us.”
An easyJet spokesman said: “We are sorry that Ms Smith’s flight from Palma to Manchester on April 1 was canceled due to unusually high rates of illness among the crew.
“We have done everything possible to minimize the impact of the disruption on customers, offering the option of free transfer to an alternative flight, a voucher or a refund, as well as arranging hotel accommodation and meals for customers where required.
“While Ms Smith was able to rebook on an alternative flight the next day, unfortunately the flight was delayed due to air traffic control restrictions on an earlier flight the aircraft was operating, resulting in the flight arriving in Manchester later than scheduled .
“While this was beyond our control, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by the subsequent delay.”
It comes as the popular low-cost airline was forced to cancel more flights today due to staff shortages caused by Covid.
Travel experts believe the chaos is likely to continue this weekend Police officers should be drafted to control frustrated passengers at airports.
