Ed Woodward’s final Man Utd transfer deal could become Erik ten Hag’s captain

Manchester United are preparing for Erik ten Hag to take over from Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season after a disappointing season at Old Trafford in the Premier League

Ed Woodward had one last deal at Manchester United before stepping down in February and that could prove to be a huge advantage for Erik ten Hag.

Donny van de Beek joined on the last day of the January transfer window everton borrowed. The Dutchman had been on the sidelines for almost two years and switched to the first team.

Back then, the deal was heralded as a real coup by the Toffees as they tried to get out of relegation troubles. In truth, the opposite has happened and Frank Lampard could be the man to take the club from league to league First League for the first time.

And Van de Beek has only played six games for Everton since his loan move – although he does start games at least, having only been benched once in that time. Unfortunately, the results didn’t follow with just one win in those six games.

While many at United have given up on the midfielder who cost £40million from Ajax in the summer of 2020, one man definitely won’t. It was Ten Hag that made Van de Beek the player he is and has had his equals real Madrid and Barcelona chase his signature.

The 25-year-old will be delighted to have his old mentor join him at Old Trafford this summer, with the odds of a permanent move to Everton increasingly unlikely. It could just be the spark he needs to get his career off the ground in England.

Erik ten Hag coached Donny van de Beek at Ajax

At Ajax, Van de Beek was partnered with Frenkie de Jong – a player on United’s transfer radar this summer – and together they achieved that Champions League semifinals. Defending champions Real Madrid were also among those eliminated from the Eredivisie side juventus.

Ten Hag was up front and spoke about how the two can work together in midfield: “Donny is a player who likes to move. It’s a strength for both Donny and Frenkie.”

Woodward is no longer in charge of transfers at United but ensuring there is no mandatory fee for Van de Beek in the future could have been a masterstroke – whether he meant it or not. With Paul Pogba due out at the end of the season, there could be a spot in the squad ahead of next year.
